Fungal diseases affecting the skin, hair, and nails are collectively referred to as tinea. Depending on which bodily part is afflicted, the illness may have a different name.
A fungal infection known as tinea is brought on by different dermatophyte fungi. It can cause illnesses including ringworm, jock itch, athlete's foot, and nail infections, and it can show up in many body areas.
Tinea capitis: Infection of the scalp/head, often known as ringworm.
Tinea corporis: Infection of the body, also referred to as ringworm.
Tinea cruris: Infection of the groin, commonly known as jock itch.
Tinea pedis: Infection of the feet, commonly known as athlete’s foot.
Tinea unguium: Infection of the nails, also called onychomycosis.
Round to ring-shaped, red, itchy rashes with scaly edges are the usual symptoms of tinea infections. Whereas infected nails might thicken and turn yellow, infections in particular places, such as the scalp, can cause hair loss.
Tinea infections are caused by dermatophyte fungi, which thrive in warm, moist environments. Factors such as poor hygiene, sweating, and wearing tight clothing or shoes can increase the risk of infection.
Localized tinea infections on the skin can often be treated with topical antifungal medications. However, if the infection involves the hair follicles or nails, oral antifungal therapy may be necessary for effective treatment.
