What is Scabies?

Scabies is an intensely itchy rash caused by an infestation with a burrowing mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. Infected individuals develop pink papules, excoriations, nodules, and burrows (thread like tracks in the skin).

Symptoms of Scabies

It's difficult to ignore the obvious symptoms of scabies: severe itching that causes you to scratch, especially at night. On susceptible areas such as the wrists, fingers, elbows, armpits, and even the genitalia, look for a rash that resembles pimples and has thin, greyish lines, or burrows. Recall that picking at these lumps can cause the skin to split and become infected. You must get medical help if you encounter any of these symptoms to stop the itching early.

Causes of Scabies

Scabies is caused by the infestation of the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. It is spread by direct, prolonged, skin-to-skin contact with a person who has scabies and may also be spread through sharing bedding, clothing, or towels with an infected person.

Addressing Scabies

Treatment for scabies typically involves the application of topical medications such as permethrin or oral medications like ivermectin to kill the mites and eggs. Additionally, thorough cleaning and disinfection of personal belongings and living spaces are essential to prevent reinfestation.
